{I didn't have my camera and it would've been weird to pull it out anyway so here's a bunch of low quality iphone pictures}
So this past weekend we had our first appointment up at Primary Children's hospital to find out our next step with Savy's ears. We knew going into it that she was going to have to be sedated to do an MRI to see the nerve pathway between her ear and brain and to do a repeat ABR test (this is the test we originally did to find out she was deaf). Waiting for this appointment was torture! I knew that we would get more answers after this appointment so that had me going crazy but I was also really worried about Sav being sedated. I blame my worries on watching too much Greys Anatomy. Anyway the night before Sav had to fast starting at 4 am so I set an alarm and woke her up and 3:45 so she could at least have something in her system. She barley drank anything! I knew in a few hours she was going to wake up starving so I assumed the day was ruined. Of course Savannah was a rockstar and slept until we had to leave for the hospital. Luckily our appointment was early in the morning. When we got to the hospital and all checked in they started prepping Sav. The nurses were wonderful. Seriously, I was sad to leave because everyone was so nice. Being so fluffy they had a hard time finding a vein for her IV but other than that she didn't fuss too much and she cooperated with all of the poking and prodding the nurses had to do to her. Daniel was able to hold her as they sedated her. She was snoring within 2 minutes (I need some of that stuff at home for the nights she won't sleep. Just kidding, kinda). From here we were sent back into the waiting room. A couple hours later they were done and Savy girl did great! She came out of sedation just fine and from here we were on the move to talk to an audiologist located in the hospital for a couple more test. After they did these (they were boring so detail isn't necessary) we found out some awesome news! Savannah can hear! Now, it's only at the frequency of a jet engine or an explosion but she can hear something which is better news than we ever expected. We left the hospital so happy. The day still wasn't over though. At this point we had to go meet Dr. Shelton, who is an otolarynologist. I'm not totally sure what that is but I do know he's the best of the best so we felt really blessed that Sav has him as a doctor. This appointment was really quick but we left even happier than we were when we walked in. Savannah is getting hearing aids! They don't know if they will work but because she can hear something (but not really because how often do you hear and explosion or jet engine) the hearing aids might work. If they don't work they stimulate the nerve to prep them for cochlear implants. We also found out that the anatomy of Sav's ears are perfect so if the hearing aids don't work she can get cochlear implants at 12 months. 12 MONTHS!!!!! We thought we were going to have to wait a few years to get implants if those were even an option but we only have to wait 9 more months!! We felt truly blessed hearing all of this. Her next appointment is on the 29th and we will have a fitting for some hearing aids. We're so excited to get this process going.
Over the past few months I have come to accept the fact the Savannah is deaf. It was hard but I know Heavenly Father created my sweet girl this way for a reason. I had hoped that these would be the answers that we would get but I knew that no matter what Savannah was still going to be my bright, beautiful, blonde baby girl that brought so much light to my life. I feel so blessed that her ears are made the way the are and that someday soon she will hear me tell her that I love her and that she will hear the silly fart sounds that already make her laugh.
